I’m very glad I read this book. I read Stephanie Butland’s previous book, The Curious Heart of Ailsa Rae, which I thought was terrific, and this new one didn’t disappoint at all.

The main characters, Veronica (Vee), Leonie and Erica are all interesting characters although Leonie is hard to like. It’s also a very interesting time when the book starts with Vee, a junior photographer for her local newspaper who is given the really boring jobs to do. However Vee has ambitions beyond those jobs and takes herself off in her own time to visit and photograph the Ford women’s strike in Dagenham. There she meets ardent feminist Leonie and this opens Vee’s eyes to the women’s movement of the 60s and beyond. From there the story plays out over the decades in various ways which I found really enjoyable.

A book I would recommend by an author who I think is really good.
