A book about the feminist movement doesn't exactly stand out as being particularly gripping but I really enjoyed this.
Centred primarily around the relationship between Veronica (Vee) Moon and Leonie Barratt it traces the friendship from the day they first meet, at the strike by the Dagenham woman at the Ford factory, until Leonie's death in 1984.
Fast forward to 2019 and Leonie's "niece" Erica is curating an exhibition of Vee's works, as a renowned photographer.
This retrospection of her work gives, an unwell, Vee the opportunity to look back over her friendship with Leonie. A chance to understand her better maybe and also to come to terms with the circumstances of Leonie's death (which effectively ended her photographic career.
The book highlights some of the main moments from the feminist movement (and shows just how "second class" women were in the late 60's, when this book begins). It's not preachy though and the movement creates a positive raison d'etre for the two main characters.
At it's heart it's a beautiful story about friendship - during good and bad times. Stunning.
