What an empowering and educational book! Not only did I enjoy the story, I feel enlightened by how much I have learned about feminism and photography.

Its well written, thoroughly researched and the structure is unique. The narrative alternates between Veronica (Vee), Leonie and Erica, Leonie’s niece. It also jumps time periods so from the present (2018) to 1960s through to 80s. Each chapter captures a different moment of history in a photo and there is a story behind each one. For example, you learn about the Ford Dagenham strike of 1968 (Vee was there to take a photo) and understand that is where Vee and Leonie met for the first time. As the story progresses, you see their friendship develop and change, as well as views on women's role in society.

I really enjoyed the focus on female friendships. Leonie was a powerful, strong woman and not very likeable. You can't help admiring her determination and devotion to her ”sisters”. Their constant battle for gender equality and informing women, like Vee that they had a choice was, for me, the core of the book.

The way I view the world will certainly change having read this novel. A very compelling story with a lot of powerful messages. I have so many thoughts on this so if you have read it, let me know.
