Although Stephanie Butland focuses on the central character, Veronica Moon, and her relationship with Leonie Barratt the main theme is about feminism in the fifty years from the Dagenham strike in 1968 to 2018. The relationship between these two women is fascinating but, equally fascinating, is the growth of feminism with women demanding equal pay for equal work and to be treated fairly in all professions and in their personal lives. Thankfully during these years there has been much legislation which has helped but as well as demonstrating how far women have come the author clearly shows there is still a great deal to be done. Much has been written about feminism and The Woman In The Photograph is a very important addition. Anyone who has read about feminism will realise how closely linked it is to many socialist aims. Stephanie Butland writes brilliantly by describing Vee's progress in her chosen profession during these years while making some extremely important points and relating events that many younger women will be fascinated to read about. Feminists have been around for centuries as described in Barbara Taylor's book, Eve and the New Jerusalem about socialism and feminism in the 19th century. They've come a long way but they're not there yet.
