The Women in the Photograph tells the lives of two women who become friends following a chance meeting at the Dagenham strike of 1968. Young, conventional and unworldly Veronica (Vee) is introduced to a new way of thinking by committed feminist Leonie. Quickly forming a deep and lasting friendship that develops and endures over time as does their dedication to the cause. Leonie is a challenging mentor - strong in her convictions, unforgiving of those who don’t measure up to her views, but also with flaws and uncertainties. Vee, a skilled photographer, is less assured but grows to become an acclaimed portrait photographer.

Told in flashbacks and contemporary descriptions it shows how much has changed but how little is different. The gender pay gap, Me Too, and women feeling they must juggle home, family, career and guilt. This book is thought provoking. It made me start looking and challenging those around me and also myself. Beautifully written with characters I engaged with and am not ashamed to say, cried for, it has made me want to take up the banner and fight against each and every injustice. A great story about recent history and sociology- it should be read by everyone.
