I finished this book yesterday and I haven't been able to pull myself out of Veronica Moon's world yet. I bought this book based almost entirely on the strength of the first exchange we are given between Veronica and her dad. He says he's "all for equal rights" but the Dagenham Ford strikes are a stretch too far. Veronica's response, "You ain't really for equal rights, then, are you?", felt so real that I just wanted to hear more from this character.

The characters in this book are probably the best thing about it, and considering that I felt the plot and the pacing and the settings (there are two) were all absolutely brilliant, this is saying something. Everyone is distinct and they are all painted with such tenderness and care. They all ring so true and each one throws up questions for the reader to answer.

It was really refreshing as well to read a fiction book that didn't pair off its main character. There are flashes of romance, but fleeting, and this is not a love story. It felt really good to just read a story about women being people, rather than pursuing a relationship (not that those stories don't have their place too). This book was just fab - please read it.
