Beautifully put together! This is a story about taking control of your own life but it's also about a very real friendship.

The characters are a joy to meet and get to know - mostly! Vicky Zimmerman is happy to let us find out for ourselves which are the major players and which are transient, giving a very natural feel to the dialogue. Kate is our viewpoint throughout the story and we witness her anguish, happiness, feelings and decision-making. We discover at least as much about Kate from the way other people treat her as from her internal musings and her actions.

What else? We look at old age, memories, love of books and, surpassing everything else, food. Recipes, sourcing ingredients, cooking, eating with others all play a major part in this story so if you are indifferent to food then you may be left feeling a little uninvolved. But seriously, who is unmoved by thoughts of food! Perhaps not a wise idea to read this novel when you're on a diet.
