I absolutely loved this book, although from the first few chapters I thought it was going to be a 'standard' chick lit storyline. However, I was pleasantly surprised and read it pretty quickly.

The basic storyline is that Kate is unhappy in her job, and has a less than ideal boyfriend who backs away from their relationship every time it starts getting serious. To top it off she is very stressed about her impending 40th birthday. Following her boyfriend, Nick changing his mind about her moving in with him she is forced to move in with her mother, an overpowering character. To take her mind off his latest 'wobble' Kate volunteers at a local care home and befriends a 97-year-old woman, Cecily. This relationship saved the storyline as it was very touching and even drew me to tears at one point.

This is a classic "finding" herself storyline, where through a series of mishaps Kate eventually works out what is right for her.

The story was very touching and essentially about relationships in unexpected places. The basic premise was quite predictable but the tales of Cecily's life along the way are intriguing and I found I wish I knew a lady half as interesting as her.

The only downside I would say is the characters were all a little stereotypical to the point of being one-dimensional. Cecily is the grumpy old lady with a heart of gold, Kate is the devoted girlfriend blind to his faults, and Nick, the boyfriend is a flake. People in general are not so one-dimensional and at times it was a little irritating.

However, the writing is good, and it was the perfect read for an afternoon in the sun.
