Kate is on the verge of turning forty when her whole life is tipped upside down when her boyfriend insists on ‘taking a break’ just as they are about to move in together. She is forced to move back home with her mother, who has a better social life than she does. While wallowing in self pity, Kate decides to volunteer at a local home for the elderly, and there she meets 97 year old Cecily, with a waspish tongue and eyes that miss nothing.

The two women forge an unlikely friendship while Kate tries to forget her own troubles. What follows is Cecily’s story of romance, loss and recipes!

What I loved about the book is, although it focuses primarily on Kate and her life, we are teased into slowly finding out about Cecily, who has led a very interesting life herself. She lends Kate a book which is a recipe book on how to get through life’s challenges by cooking the perfect meals! After Kate starts reading it we see how she slowly starts to realise that now is the time to change her life.

This is an inspiring read that I really enjoyed it and took it on holiday with me. I finished it quickly as it’s an easy read with breaks throughout. Make sure you read right through to the end and look at the photos to find out the ‘real’ story! I even had a tear in my eye at the end. Just brilliant. Highly recommended for a summer read!
