Whilst doing its best to feel bouncy, modern and funny, this book felt more like something out of the late 90s. Even within the early pages, there were comments about "slutty shoes", someone having "borderline personality disorder", and other comments which frankly should have been left back where they belong, twenty years ago.
It was evident the author was wonderfully capable of wit at moments, but even as far as "chic lit" goes, it was pretty low in standard. I found this all really disappointing as after the preview thought it might be a nice lighthearted read.
It was so fueled by the idea that a woman DOES need a man in the background even when not said explicitly. The comments mentioned above as examples might have been used to give "realistic dialogue", but you can do as much without being so hugely disrespectful.
I couldn't connect at all to the character, and it was just all around a bit outdated. If this had been published in 2000 it would have flown off of shelves.
