The combination of a simple rhyming-narrative thread and beautiful illustrations in this delightful book is bound to appeal to very young children. It provides a lovely way to open up conversations about how confusing life can sometimes feel and, through discussions with a trusted adult, the child can explore ways to not only acknowledge that confusion, but to realise that worrying about things is normal and that, usually through a process of trial and error, it’s possible to work things out. I loved the message that although it’s important to try new things, we’re all bound to fail at times:

‘Be your best when you can. If you can’t that’s OK. Everybody falls once in a while. But there’s only one you who can do what you do … Sing it loud with your heart and your smile! It’s OK, you know, to just not know how each story ends. Yes, there’s only one you but you’re far from alone when your stories are shared with friends.’

The messages in this deceptively simple book have the potential to validate a child’s experiences, to empower them to widen their horizons and to embrace all the different opportunities the world has to offer. This isn’t a traditional ‘beginning, middle and end’ story but it’s strength lies in the fact that the sparse prose encourages discussion and stimulates a child’s imagination.
