Review of The World's First Rollercoaster and other Amazing Inventions by Mike Barfield and illustrated by Franziska Hollbacher.

This is a brilliant, fun, informative, interactive book of many inventions, old and new.

Each invention is well explained and explored with a Whatever Next? extension section on the opposite page. I liked the almost chronological progression from past inventions to more recent ones such as tablet computers, smart phones and electric vehicles. So many themes are covered, broken down into topics including house and home, wear and tear and food and drink.

The book is a great size and lightweight to hold for smaller hands and arms. It can be read as a whole book or just individual sections. It would make a brilliant book in a classroom, dipping in for facts to enhance curriculum topics or at home, great in the school holidays. There are hours of reading, discussing and further exploring to be enjoyed. I love the section at the end for personal inventions - Junior Genius - to draw and describe an invention.

I must note, the illustrations by Franziska Hollbacher are absolutely wonderful and enhance the information for the reader in a fun and colourful way.

Overall a brilliant book that is jam packed with facts in a fun and stimulating way. I highly recommend.
