This magnificent story pulls on the heartstrings of even the toughest of souls. This story is about is of sisters living in the Blitz and experiencing love and life, going against all of the social expectations. The details and rich descriptions in the novel make the time periods feel authentic and come alive. This is brilliantly structured storytelling, about all that it is to be human and flawed, class, friendship, marriage, family, being a parent, family dynamics, behaviour and decisions made when a person has little idea as to their consequences in the future. The cover is what drew me in the most, I particularly love how there are two women who are mostly inferred to be the sister, looking over the city, with the reader having no clue of what awaits them. I would love to read more of this book and indulge in this marvellous masterpiece that Lucy Caldwell created.
