Lucy Caldwell`s These Days is an interesting, insightful and moving read. A historical fiction that is set in the backdrop of the German bombings of Belfast in the year 1941. The book is also focused on providing much insight into the social and living conditions of that time. However, the main theme is about a family and their two daughters, Emma and Audrey. The story is written well and in an interesting way - the chapters are named after the attacks. At some points, it felt that some of the content has been unnecessarily added, but overall the book is an easy to follow read.

Even though much of the story felt predictable, the focus on the social aspect and living conditions of the Belfast people keeps the book engaging and interesting. Caldwell does try to provide an honest and to-the-point reflection of the conditions and also the impact of the war on the people of Belfast and also in particular to the family and relationships of Emma and Audrey.
