This book gripped me from beginning to end. It is the tale of two sisters living through the Belfast Blitz and the impact of this time and place on their respective lives. It is a raw and emotional read, and I found myself liking all of the characters in different ways.

Emma is in a same sex relationship, and I found the descriptions of this sympathetic and historically accurate. Her tale is particularly heart rending. Audrey I found a little more difficult to care about, although her story line improved as the book went on and I liked that there was a distinctly feminist twist to her actions in the end.

I found the lack of speech marks frustrating; most of the time it was clear who was speaking, however I had to reread several paragraphs to make sense of them, which somewhat broke the flow for me.

Overall, a really strong story that left me feeling the characters' emotions after I'd finished reading; I can't ask for more!
