The story is told predominantly from the perspectives of the three women, Florence, Audrey and Emma. Although this is a fictional family, it could very well have been written about any number of different families alive during these times. The author perfectly captured the fear of the character as they heard planes overhead, as well as what they witnessed when they emerged from their bunkers or hideouts after the bombings. Although the Bell family were middle class and lived out of the City we did get to read about the utter detestation wreaked on the those not as fortunate and the plight of those that were now homeless.
The author has wonderfully written so much emotion into the pages. The story itself is so vivid and well written, it has engaging characters and through their eyes we get to see what it was like living through such awful times and how theirs and thousands of others lives changed forever.
A must read for any historical fiction fan.
