This book is set in Belfast during the Second World War . The Belfast blitz I have heard about but after reading this story the horror and hardships the people of Belfast had to endure is mind blowing.

The sisters in the book Emma and Audrey are like chalk and cheese. One is engaged to be married to a young doctor and another is in a secret relationship with another woman. As we are introduced to the sisters and their family it helped me understand how the war and the four nights of bombing in Belfast impacted people on a personal level.

As I live in Northern Ireland I really connected with the locations and the dialect which had me smiling as I’m so used to the spoken word rather than seeing it written down. This brought great authenticity to the story. I have been to the Northern Ireland War Memorial Museum and this book really brought to life some of the objects and pictures I had seen.

The horrors of war leapt from every page. Also the resilience of the people who mucked in together regardless of religion or class to stand against a bigger enemy.

Overall I really enjoyed the book the only downside for me was that I felt the characters and situations could have been explored more fully as I sometimes felt like there were a few loose ends but that is just my opinion.

This book is one I feel the reader will really enjoy especially if you like historical fiction.
