I found this book to be a disappointing read not because of the actual novel content but because of the writing style and the lack of speech marks!! Whilst I don't profess to be an expert on English grammar and this comment may seem to be pedantic and old fashioned, I actually found that their omission made it really difficult to enjoy the read in a relaxed and flowing manner because I had to keep re-reading passages to make sure of what I was following. Whilst the story content itself contained interesting material following the lives of the two sisters Emma and Audrey and their very different personal circumstances with one being engaged to be married and the other conducting a relationship with another woman (which certainly would not have been tolerated given the time period of the Second World War), the overall enjoyment of the book, for me, was not found.
