I've seen other reviews suggesting that this is 'perfect for fans of Sarah Waters' but having read Waters amazing The Night Watch, I can only imagine fans of hers would be massively disappointed by this.
Basically it's a run of the mill wartime domestic drama with nothing to elevate it above the hundreds of others already out there - the writing's okay and I have no doubt it's been meticulously researched by the author but it just feels a bit 'dry' for me - it's hard to muster any feeling for the characters because they don't feel well drawn enough to spring to life in the imagination and feel like fully realised, well-formed people, and as such I didn't feel an emotional response to the plot.
For such an emotive period this, sadly, just left me cold and feeling utterly uninvolved in the story enough to really care what would happen to any of the characters
