Enjoyable
This book focuses on the lives of two sisters living in Belfast during the Second World War. Overall, I enjoyed the book, especially from the midpoint where there were lots of interesting things going on. However, there were characteristics of the book that I did not like. There was a complete absence of quotation marks around speech. Sometimes I had to reread a passage to establish whether it was the characters thoughts being expressed or actually something that they were saying out loud. I did get used to this as I read and I found it less annoying as I progressed through the book than I had at the beginning. It was also sometimes difficult to tell whether somethings had actually happened as opposed to the characters' thoughts. I was convinced that one of the characters had got married at one point following a detailed description of her wedding only to find out later that this had not actually taken place. These points aside, I thought it was a good book that held my attention and featured characters who I actually cared about.
