Lovely but a little lacking in depth

A lovely book, but for the genre I found it a little lacking in depth. I enjoy the descriptive, gritty element of war-time characters, especially reading about life for women of all ages and social standing. Going about their daily business or being 'left out/left behind' while the men are in the thick of war conditions is always illuminating.

Both of the sisters - the main characters - were given great settings for their sibling positions in the family, but we kept being sucked into the mothers' story which was very vague, hinting at her disappointment in life despite her bountiful family. When I got involved in the story and mind of the girls at points I was felt connected to them, but it slipped away so quickly, leaving a very beige background. Some of the scenarios were very realistic, working and trying to be part of the war effort, I felt these could have been expanded.
