This book is about the German bombing of Belfast during the Second World War. I found it quite interesting as it is a setting I was not really aware of and I learned a lot of new colloquial words (although I’ll probably not have cause to use them again).
The main protagonists are two sisters, Audrey and Emma, whose relationships both break up during the period of the invasion.
The descriptions of the devastation and suffering caused by the bombs is poignant. The destruction, maiming, evacuation, death and confusion are all well described.
I read this book whilst on holiday. It was ideal for picking up and putting down without losing the gist of what was happening or feeling compelled to keep reading on to find out what happens.
I would recommend this book to readers of Sarah Waters and similar and would be happy to read further books by this author - although probably wouldn’t rush out to but them, probably wait until they appear in the library.
