I firstly need to say I am from Belfast. I am biased. I loved this book. The Belfast Blitz contain stories that are so personal to me. My grandparents and parents lived through the Blitz. My Granny’s house was damaged and the local football teams pitch was blown up. The aerial attack was aiming for the aircraft factory Shorts which was very close by. It was a very frightening time for young and old alike.
The descriptions in the book are harrowing and well written, a lot of detailed research has went into the story. The two main characters are sisters, Audrey and Emma. One is in a lesbian relationship and the other is engaged to be married to a doctor. There are social issues incorporated in the book, women’s rights eg. women losing their job when they got married, homosexuality and contraception. All would have been very controversial at that time. We’ve come a long way !
