Bilal is caught between two cultures - the life that he has made for himself as an accountant is as far away from the way he was raised as a Muslim in Birmingham as can be. He is called Bill by his friends and neighbours on the community council. His relationship with his wife is a case in point - she is able to relate both to the local community in rural Babbel's End as well as being able to hold conversations in Punjabi with Bilal's relatives.

The recent death of his mother brings this culture clash to a head - he finds himself drawn to the need to meet his mother's dying wish - to build a mosque in Babbel's End but what will his neighbours think of this? What changes will this bring to his life and the way that he is leading it?
