Book-lovers are so lucky that there are so many brilliant Muslim authors writing great books filled with humour, wisdom and compassion. They write from their own experiences of growing up in a Western country in a manner that is accessible and enjoyable to all readers. This Green And Pleasant Land by Ayesha Malik is a perfect example. In this book she has written about Sakeena Hasham who moved to Birmingham from Pakistan 63 years previously and is now an elderly, and unfortunately dying, woman. On her deathbed she asks her son, Bilal, a successful accountant, to build a mosque in the, very English, village he moved to with his wife and stepson. The First Impression is very short but it doesn't take long to realise just how good this book is going to be. There are many fascinating characters introduced on every page, from the villagers to Bilal's family and I'm sure all of them are going to provide the reader with great entertainment. Can't wait to read the rest.
