This is funny and touching, very readable. I truly enjoyed the tale of Balil, trying to keep everyone happy whilst fulfilling the wishes of his dead mother.

I had so much sympathy for Balil. He takes medication for an ulcer, painkillers and sleeping pills. I suspect his ailments are as a result of trying to be all things to all people. The characterisation in this novel is astute and subtle. What is more these are characters to care about.

The setting of the village is very chocolate box and how Balil can fulfil his mother’s wish will no doubt prove funny, but thought provoking. I think this in an excellent focus for a novel. It’s very unique.

This is well observed and although an easy read, it has much to give the reader to think about.
