I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book. The concept seemed quite extreme and I was a bit sceptical. However, this book is about much more than building a mosque. It's about family and all it's relationships and tensions. It's about community, the people in it and who make it work, and most of all it's about challenging people's preconceived notions of identity and culture. I was absolutely gripped by this book. It was so stimulating and interesting. I warmed to the characters so quickly and was genuinely moved as events unfolded. I think Malik does an amazing job of expressing the conflicts within each character which makes them feel so real. I would recommend this book to everyone because I genuinely think it's absolutely superb but also I think we can all learn from it. I think this book has the ability to change opinion, and that makes it incredibly powerful.
