This book was very ploddy, seemed to gently carry along, addressing quite serious issues in a very nicey nicey way. This was the theme of the book really, a very controversial story line, involving a quintessentially English village, dealt with in a namby pamby way. Besides all that the story was ok. It would have been more interesting if the cultural topics had been addressed differently, maybe a little more grit to them.

On Bilal's mothers death bed she asks Bilal to build a mosque in his village, as her last request. Having lost his faith some time ago, Bilal decides to honor his mother's last wish and starts to put plans in place. Whatever Bilal thought his neighbours though of him and his family, he had no idea that the village were so against change! Bilal has to fight not just for his faith but also for his marriage.
