This is a lovely book which invites the reader in from the very beginning. Even the cover has a welcoming feel.

When I first read the synopsis and saw that this is about a deathbed request, I (wrongly) thought that it might be too serious.

Actually, though, this novel has a gently bubbling on-going humour underlying in its pages. This is no easy feat, not only for a novel that begins with a beginning focus on death but also for one dealing with religious issues. These issues are dealt with very sensitively.

Whilst this was not the most developed of novels, this is only somewhat of a critisism - the fact that it is very centrally focused on the village adds to the feeling of community. I wouldn’t mind living there
