I really wasn't sure about this book, looked a bit twee from the cover. It was a bit twee but definitely better than I'd anticipated. I found the main character, Bilal, harder to empathise with than the other characters and struggled with the main plotline, that he was going to build a mosque. My practical mind knew this would never happen and I found it hard to just 'go with the flow' of the book and trust the author. In hindsight I should have trusted her...the last third of the book was much better (perhaps because we got to know the other characters more?) and I really enjoyed it. The writing style was OK but didn't draw me in immediately like some other writers and at times I found the interjections of Pakistani a bit frustrating without any translation (I didn't know about the translation at the end of the book until I got to the end of the book!). I realise that this was probably intentional but it still irked a bit and felt it was just trying to be too clever. This is a nice, gentle read, sometimes thought-provoking, but nothing more. That's not a criticism.
