Ayesha Malik writes about the integration of different cultures with a very light touch in This Green and Pleasant Land. After promising his mother, Sakeena, on her death bed to build a mosque in the English village he lives in Bilal then faces the problem of how to make this happen. The author introduces the reader to many of the villagers with their various characteristics which many people will find familiar. The reader is also introduced to Bilal's immediate and extended family, full of great characters. Bilal is a member of the Parish Council and, until he proposes building a mosque, has appeared to fit in well within the community. There are conflicts and surprising friendships as the two cultures meet, all written about with humour but with an underlying question of how we would all react in a similar situation. Very readable and enjoyable, a great book from an accomplished writer.
