This was a refreshing Rom-com YA for me. I love a fake dating trope, and this was a different style to what I usually read. At the forefront is the diversity, with the main characters being Desi, which I want to read more of.

I loved Zara and could really relate to her, while I couldn’t help but get attached to Adnan, even if he does make some seriously questionable decisions throughout the book. I also liked how Zara’s parents played a big part in the story, with Zara having a positive relationship with both her parents. I really enjoyed how love is explored in different forms, especially platonic. I could really relate with how Zara felt pressured to be in a romantic relationship with her best friend despite not having those feelings – a situation I went through around her age.

A couple of issues for me was that it falls back onto the bad communication aspect, something which really frustrates me in books as I feel that tension could be made in other ways. Additionally, the inclusion of Pokemon Go does age the story a bit for me, but that’s probably because I have no idea is Pokemon Go is still popular for teens.

I can really see this book being made into a television series, as it feels reminiscent of early 00’s rom-coms.

Thank you Readers First for a free copy of the book.
