The front cover, which shows the two main characters struggle to make eye contact while a younger man eyes up the woman, ties in with the theme of real feelings that come from fake dating, as Zara's best friend Adnan begs her to pretend to date him to cover up his new top-secret relationship. Zara, who loves 90s romcoms, romance novels and grand sweeping gestures, is unsure about this as she's desperate to have a real love story of her own, but agrees in order to make her parents happy and stop them arguing for a while. So, the act begins: after all, how different can pretending to be in a relationship with your best friend be to just hanging around with them like usual? Quite a lot as it turns out; with fake dating comes fake hand-holding, fake kissing and real feelings. Then, when a new man turns up in Zara's life, things get more confusing than ever...
