This isn't at all the kind of stuff I usually look at however I'm always up for trying as I've only briefly read similar things before and so thought I'd have a look.

I'm glad I did because the opening and the first look as a whole is intriguing in how it's written. I wasn't expecting the direct address to the reader and it served to pull me in as we, The reader, are directly included in the text.

The world is described in detail that give just enough detail to make it real in our minds. And the reminiscent tone of the mother telling her story is done well. Although the time frame jumps around periodically it is done as to reveals more information like the possibility of a second crop of strawberries.

Throughout the first look the characters a built quickly and realistically and the atmosphere of the setting is solidified.

Towards the end we are given a glimpse that this is only the start of the story and there is much more to be revealed.
