A mother's love knows no end but for Louisa the life and the future of her child is intricately linked with Louisa's and her family's complicated history.

I confess that this is not usually the sort of book that I would read but having read the first few pages I was captivated by the words of the narrator (Louisa) and the hints about the complexity of her family history to the extent that I kept reading and wanted to read more.

Louisa's family background stretches from pre World War 1 Turkey through to Germany after reunification and as such it shows how inter-dependent identity in Europe can be.

Perhaps a salutary reminder that in this era of Brexit and ultra nationalism that family, identity and belonging are seldom simple concepts within Europe.
