An interesting thriller about a school teacher who gets in the middle of some rough tough men who want to do bad things to one of her girls.

Good use of descriptive language brought a concise narrative. The plot was refined, but the story didn’t really grab me.

The author’s direct experience of child management shines in the text. The misbehaving school kids, fighting, urinating, the teaching bureaucracy too.

The character names were diverse, Destiny Jones, Jim Taggart, Barry Tubb, although these were a little twee I got used to them. The protagonist Jenni Wales is ex-army, possibly ex-Royal family going by that surname, a good strong female character who takes no nonsense from men, good. This character sensationalises a little on the ex-army norm, it’s true that army people are prone to bragging, but it’s not normally about their kills. Jenni is knowledgeable about guns, which is what’s important, Glock 9, SA80, Glock 17.

Jenni has Alexithymia, which was reasonably well covered, but could have had more details on what that is, but it’s a skill which will no doubt lead to some mishaps but some parts were unintentionally funny. This, when combined with her abduction of a child to keep her safe could bring an explosive novel, but hopefully the balance is right.

Part of me wants to read this one… but the way the story switches from a future to a present narrative, this wasn’t original and took away momentum, suspense and my drive to read further.
