From the very start the tale is gripping. The lead, Jenni, is a maths teacher, it becomes clear she is new to teaching after having a career in the army.
She becomes immediately concerned for a pupil after seeing she has a black eye, Destiny is an at risk child, in care and unplaceable due to being troubled and an arsonist. The school is her last chance and her potential is at risk of being unrealised. Its obvious that Jenni is invested in Destiny despite them not having a discernible relationship.
When Destiny gets a call and is so scared she urinates Jenni immediately takes action confronting a van parked outside the school that she feels is responsible for Destiny's fear.
Jenni reveals early on in the book that her actions are responsible for her losing her job and being vilified by the police. She also lets the reader know that she has a condition called Alexithymia so can her reading of the station be trusted.
It is a gripping story and I really want to find out more about what happens to the characters.
