Jenni is an ex corporal in the British Army who has difficulty in reading and responding to the emotions of others. In the army this was not much of a problem but as a teacher of Mathematics in a secondary school it can be an issue for both the pupils and her colleagues who tend to be wary of her and to whom she cannot relate. Jenni’s sole ally is her father as only he understands her issues and that is enough for her on a daily basis.
Then she meets Destiny who is a looked after child and whom Jenni believes to be at risk of immediate harm from men sitting outside the school in a white van. This leads her to take the decision that will change her life and those of everyone around her, namely to give Destiny a lift from Hastings to Hull to stay with her aunt.
It rapidly transpires that all is not what it seems and what follows is at times a harrowing tale of exploitation, recrimination and miscalculation.
I have to confess that it took me a while to buy into the premise of this book but I am glad that I stuck with it as there is a sudden change of gear and direction that keeps you guessing the outcome until the very end.
