The morning began like any other apart from the fact that Jenni Wales , teacher was quite nervous at taking year ten for maths, which was a combination of being ex-army, new to teaching and to the school. We learn that she has Alexithymia , an inability to identify and describe emotions in herself and others making it difficult to read people, herself included. We also know she is haunted by someone with bright blue eyes from the past. This sometimes has a confusing element in all books, going from past to present. She has a pupil Destiny Mills, a genius,who is rarely ever in class, and who is in care. During registration she notices that the girl has a black eye and decides to find out why. This is a monumental decision as Jenni usually keeps her head down and prefers the quiet life. Destiny seems scared of something or someone. A phone call orders her to leave school, but Jenni is determined to stop her , it's then that Destiny has a bladder moment and needs a change of clothes. Jenni orders her to stay put and races outside where a van is parked with two men inside, one of which has bright blue eyes...they nearly run her over,but the army training comes in useful as she dives out of the way, the van racing off. Back in school Jenni hands Destiny over to a collegue with instructions not to leave her alone.As Jenni goes to her class who are causing a commotion, she glances out of the window, Destiny is heading towards the van, it was split decision time : take control of her class or rescue Destiny? Once again Jenni races outside, grabs her, they race back into school she bolts the doors but one of the men has got out and followed them, there is a standoff through the glass and he stares at Jenni with bright blue eyes...he lets her know he has a handgun. .. Later on when explanations have been made to the head teacher George Danvers, social services, and the police have been informed Jenni is arrested and loses her job . But that's not all -Mr Danvers is hospitalised, loses his job, ultimately wrecking his career. Leaving us on a knife edge wanting to know more !
