Jenni is embarking on a new career as a teacher after leaving the army.

She suffers from something called alexithymia which, according to google, is a Greek word which means she has “no words for emotion”.

This doesn’t make Jenni a very likeable person but when one of her pupils, a 15 year old girl called Destiny, appears in class with a black eye and seems so distressed that she wets herself, Jenni feels very concerned for her and after an attempt is made to abduct Destiny from school, Jenni becomes determined to ensure she doesn’t come to further harm.

The story is told through the voices of Destiny and Jenni and we are taken on a ride with them to keep Destiny safe.

Neither of the protagonists are particularly likeable but both are fascinating in their own particular way.

This book hooked me in right to the very last page and though the storyline was disturbing, I found it an exceptional read and one I would highly recommend.
