I absolutely adored this book and highly recommend it, especially if you’re a lover of YA fiction. The writing and story were both very compelling and there was a wonderful tone to the novel that, like the sirens within it, was both beautiful and dark at the same time.

Both of the main characters were fascinating and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to learn about the two of them. Lira is infamous throughout the sea and on land for the hearts that she has stolen so it should come as no real surprise that she’s a fairly ferocious individual. Learning about her past and seeing the world through her eyes was very interesting and she’s definitely a character with hidden depths. Prince Elian was also very captivating and I warmed to him swiftly. He isn’t your typical prince and his love for the sea was easy to see whilst reading this book. There were a lot of other characters that I liked too, especially some of Elian’s crew who were a delight to read about.

My favourite part of this novel was the world that it was set within however. The inhabitants of the sea were painted in very vivid detail, some of them described in such a way that they could easily send chills down a spine. As for the land above sea... well it’s hard to know where to begin as it’s one of a hundred kingdoms. Naturally you don’t see all of them in this novel but the ones that you do were very intriguing, as were the few that were mentioned but not visited. Each of these lands are known for something different (gold, love, inventions and ice to name a few) and have their own royals who are surrounded by myths and fables. They were fascinating to learn about and each land definitely had its own distinct feel.

Once again I just want to say that I really do recommend this book. Also, thanks to the wonderful world that it was set within, I truly hope to see more of it someday; even if it’s just in the form of some novellas. The setting held a whole lot of promise and I’d truly love to see some other people’s stories – and lands – in more depth.
