To Kill a Kingdom is a darker retelling of The Little Mermaid, Lira who’s the daughter of the Sea Queen has been transformed into a human and banished to land to fulfil a quest which she first believes she can but is faced with obstacles along the way. I was immediately hooked from the beginning of the book, “I have a heart for every year I’ve been alive”, I think that this book is an amazing dark fantasy book that tells a compelling, vicious story without falling into all the usual tropes.

Lira is a siren princess, well known to humans because of all the princes whose hearts she ripped away – literally. As the result of disobeying her mother, the Sea Queen punishes Lira by turning her into a human. Elian is a siren killer and a free spirit, he wants nothing more than to put a stop to the siren who kills mercilessly. These two unlikely companions are thrown together by their strange circumstances, each wants to kill the other but it’s only Lira who is aware of both of their identities.

I really enjoyed the development of their relationship through both of their morally grey and questionable personalities alongside the very likeable side characters. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a dark fantasy or an enemies to lovers trope, and I will certainly be adding the other books written by this incredible author to my list.
