So, in full disclosure, I was a huge fan of the Little Mermaid movie when I was little. I mean, what little girl wasn't... before we all learned about feminism, and started to question the idea of a woman having to lose her voice to win her man, etc.

I began "To Kill a Kingdom" with this varied baggage: a little nostalgic, a little skeptical. A few chapters in, and I was hooked (pun intended) on this dark, rich story about the complicated inheritance of kingdoms that rest on the shoulders of first-borns, the knife's edge relationship between the ocean and the countries that live on it's shores, and whether love can cross all boundaries.

Wow. Is this really Alexandra Christo's first novel?

If you like your heroes and heroines unlikely, if you like your dramas rich... and bloody, if you like epics that are TOLD IN A STAND ALONE NOVEL (praise the heavens!), then you will love, love this book.
