The premise of To Kill a Kingdom is adapted from the Little Mermaid which is very ontrack for the recent reboot trend in Hollywood. Alexandra Christo does amp up the gore and darkness in a way that is more reminiscent to the Grimm Brother's original tale than the tame Disney's Little Mermaid. The idea of using sirens who are stone cold killers rather than cutesy mermaids makes the story a lot more fun as a retelling which I commend Christo for. Despite this, the enemies-to-lovers trope is so tiring and cliche at this point. The romance in To Kill a Kingdom was formulaic to connect it to the fairytale but ultimately drew me away from the story more than anything. It didn't really add all that much and the book would have been perfectly fine without this storyline.
