Engaging, but Forgettable

It usually doesn't take much to draw me into a mermaid story. I was the child obsessed with Ariel, the only VHS I would ever play at after school club and I would drive my Mum crazy by staying in the bath for hours, imaging I had a sparkly tail of my own and a myriad of fish shaped friends! So, as soon as I heard about this book, I was on board, a mermaid killer and a spurned princess of the sea, a potential for a forbidden love story?! All the elements are there, I just felt a little unsatisfied with the execution. A lot of the tropes we're familiar with in YA, but I wouldn't mind that if I'd just had a better grasp on the characters, I felt as though I didn't spend long enough with them in their world to really feel invested in what was happening to them. I also felt the world building to be a little lacking, and some parts predictable. However, I did like the themes and the way some parts were written, I just don't think it's one I'll re-read or rave about.
