Since the book is very hyped, I wanted to read it too. It’s definitely something else and if you’re a fan of “The Little Mermaid”, “Ariel” or other sea stories, you’ll definitely find Elians and Liras stories to be enjoyed. Despite the pleasant writing style, the book couldn’t get me carried away, but it got better. At first I had my difficulties, because it was only about the formation of the world (which was really successful), because I just lacked the tension that immediately picks me up and draws me under its spell. In the beginning, it was replaced by the cruelty of the two protagonists, which somehow gave a completely wrong impression of them. In my opinion, Elian in particular was portrayed worse than he is, but this could also be due to his self-perception. Because we learn most about the prince himself, because fortunately he has got chapters from his own point of view.
I find that very fitting in such a book and it also drives the action, which on the other hand would falter a bit. Elian’s comrades Madrid and Kye also provided particularly amusing scenes. He quickly found a place in my heart with his funny- flirty comments and she is a strong woman because of her self-confident, self-esteeming nature, who is definitely one of my favorite characters in this book. Together they make the perfect duo and complete the chaotic perfect team of pirates. Elian’s crew is always a fun factor in this book and I think such loyal and self-sacrificing friends is neccesary for every good pirate;).
Lira’s environment, on the other hand, is rather a contrast; she grew up in a cruel world where friendship and family are worthless. Her attachment to Khalia makes her a special one of her kind right from the start. I think that will definitely make a smooth transition to her learning the benefits of loyalty and friendship on board. Unfortunately, this took me a little too long, until Lira and Elian meet for the first time. But when they do, you quickly realize that they find each other very fascinating. Both are impressed by the other in their own way and hide it under their quite funny, constant exchange of punches. In my opinion, these are the passages that make them so sympathetic to the reader as a couple and also as single characters. But those who expect a lot of romance will still be disappointed, because the pace is reasonable, but still slow and the two have their own idea of romance and expressions of love. However, I don’t find that very disturbing in itself, but it makes her story even more unique, which is rather annoying to me: the lack of tension. In some places you could definitely have expanded the scenes and dialogues to generate more tension. This arc was by no means stretched strongly here, except for a small plotwist at the end, the book could unfortunately not carry me as far as I wanted. Maybe I have very high expectations, but I think this book is more of a book to read for the characters and not for the plot.
Conclusion: An average book that is just right for in between and can inspire with interesting characters.
