It took me almost HALF of this book to realise this was a Little Mermaid retelling, I was so caught up in the story that I didn't even twig that that main character's name is basically Ariel backwards (Lira).
I liked the writing style of this book, but for me the story fell a little flat, it didn't grip me the way that I was expecting it to and I felt that the main character went from villian to anti-hero to straight up hero far too easily, and there wasn't enough backstory to really make it believable.
I think the world building in the book was kind of put to one side, and maybe if I had gone into the book knowing it was a retelling, and knowing the world more, this wouldn't have been the case, although I don't think the world improved much once I had figured it out.
