I was really excited to read this book, but it wasn’t as great as I would have hoped. I do think it’s definitely intriguing that the book’s main character is a siren and that the book revolves around this branch of Fantasy. It’s not something most fantasy authors write about. I liked that the mermaids and sirens weren’t portrayed as Kind beauties of the ocean, but as the brutal, luring creatures known in legends like “The Lorelei”. The content of the story itself was good, it had a good climax, and I liked the characters as well, but I just felt sort of distanced from them. At some point the pace of the story just became slow and everything kind of felt detached. I also feel that the thoughts and morals the characters think about become a bit repetitive. It’s like Lira (the protagonist) keeps having the same moment of clarity. However, I don‘t regret having read the book and I definitely loved the ocean aesthetic that for me was also mirrored and woven into the writing itself.
