I thought this was well written, the first person style really lets you get to know that characters quickly and helps paint their scenes well so you can really imagine the world you are reading about.
There was a lot of little bits of exposition peppered through the first few chapters to help set up the rules of the world the characters are in, while these felt a bit deliberate at times it was a quick way to get the story up and running.
I do feel like there is some influence from the little mermaid in this story, it feels like it might become a bit of a darker re-imagining of the story, but it definitely came into my mind a lot as I read. I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing however as some re imaginings are really good so I would like to read more of this story and find out.
