I can totally see why so many people love this book, and I would highly recommend this book if you like swashbuckling tales with romance and high stakes. That being said I think you would prefer this book if you are a fan of shorter standalones rather than longer more in-depth series, this is what is preventing me from rating this book any higher.
It is super atmospheric with vivid descriptions and overall a really lush and complex world. I totally want more of this! There is so much potential if it wasn't so short.
The world within this novel alone is immersive and the plot is effortlessly engaging in a way that will make you want to keep reading until you are done. Both of the perspectives are really strong and the characters themselves are even stronger.
I also enjoyed the themes of family, humanity, love, and responsibility as they went into more detail and were much more multilayered than I expected.
Overall it is probably the best little mermaid retelling I have read to date.
